I have suffered from painful knee and ankle joints for a number of years. As my weight steadily increased, so did the impact on my fitness. For someone who had always been pretty active, I was out of breath and in pain from just the smallest exertion. I will be 60 in January and decided I didn’t want to start my 61st year the way I started my 60th. After consulting my doctor, I started a healthy eating program through the NHS and started walking. At first I was lucky if I could manage 10 minutes before I was out of breath and in pain, but gradually I was able to walk a bit further each day. Since January I have lost 4 1/2 stones and now try to do 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day. My Fitbit has become my new best friend.
I now walk everywhere - to the shops, to the gym which I have recently joined. I realised how far I had come on this journey when out walking on the Walk 4 in 4. A year ago I would never have been able to carry on a conversation as we walked and I certainly wouldn’t have been able to walk for an hour at a reasonably quick pace. The walk 4 in 4 event has gradually built up from 1 mile to 4 miles walks over 4 weeks. Next week we will walk 3 miles taking just over an hour.
I also plan to complete part of the Moon Walk this summer. A year ago today this would have been unheard off. I plan to keep up my walking for daily journeys and look forward to the next Stirling Active Travel Hub walking events. I am very keen to try Nordic Walking.
